Former Ferodo Factory safety concerns

North Wales Police and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service are continuing to jointly investigate incidents of deliberate ignition at the derelict Ferodo Factory, and want to remind people of the dangers surrounding entering such sites.

The warning comes after emergency services responded to two fires in the derelict Ferodo Factory in Caernarfon yesterday evening and in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday 28 June).

Both incidents have since been confirmed as deliberate ignition.

Derelict sites such as the former Ferodo Factory have high levels of asbestos and other hazardous substances.

Officers are urging people to think about the consequences of unknowingly getting close to dangerous material, unstable structures and starting fires.

Sergeant Emma Williams said: “People need to be aware of the wider dangers before someone gets hurt, or worse. Deliberate fires are a serious crime and those responsible will face the full force of the law.”

Tim Owen, Arson Reduction and Business Education Manager at North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said : “We have been called to this location twice in the last 24 hours – we mobilised three appliances from Bangor and Caernarfon at 1908hrs last night, where we stayed until 20.30hrs, and then again four appliances from Bangor, Caernarfon and Menai Bridge were mobilised to the same site at 4.08hrs this morning and were in attendance until 6.53hrs.

“Deliberate fires like this put unnecessary pressure on emergency services and take our resources away from genuine emergencies – it means our firefighters are potentially unavailable for life threatening fires and road accidents elsewhere.”

North Wales Police is appealing for anyone who witnessed or has information about the fires at the disused Ferodo Factory to contact 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
