On the morning of Friday, December 30 at 0805 hrs, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received several calls to a house fire at portal Avenue, Wrexham, stating that people were still in the property.
Three fire appliances were mobilised and they were confronted by a very serious fire in a mid terraced property. Thick acrid smoke was issuing from the front first floor bedroom window and it was quickly established that a young girl was trapped in this room. Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were sent into the property to locate the child whilst, outside, the remaining members of the crew dealt with an injured man who had escaped from the first floor window just prior to the crews arriving.
The young child was located under the bed and was rescued and carried out by the firefighters. Her initial condition was very poorly and she was not showing any signs of life. Oxygen was administered by the crews prior to the arrival of paramedics and the young girl started to breathe. The girl and the injured man were taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital by the Ambulance Service. One firefighter received burns to the face during firefighting operations.
This was a very serious house fire, the cause of which is still being investigated. On this occasion, the activation of a smoke alarm woke the occupiers and saved the lives of the family.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service would ask all North Wales residents to ensure that smoke alarms are working, that everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire and that people remain vigilant at all times.
