Couple hear smoke alarm and call 999

Posted

A couple who called 999 after hearing a smoke alarm activating helped save a man from a fire in a property on Ambrose Street, Bangor in the early hours of this morning (Thursday March 9TH).

Crews from Bangor and Menai Bridge were called to the property at 00.38hrs after receiving the 999 call reporting a smoke alarm sounding and smoke issuing from the property.

Emergency services arrived on scene and one male casualty, who was in the house at the time of the fire, was taken to hospital suffering from suspected smoke inhalation.

Crews used two sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the fire, which is thought to have been started by a naked flame igniting bedding.

Gwyn Jones, Community Safety Manager for Gwynedd and Môn, said: “This incident once again highlights how smoke alarms can save lives. If this smoke alarm had not activated and alerted the couple, who were outside the property at the time, the outcome could have been very different.

"The occupant was very fortunate that the couple heard the alarm and acted as they did - I'd like to commend them for contacting the fire and rescue service immediately and for helping to protect their community in this way.

“Having a working smoke alarm means you are far more likely to escape unharmed in the event of a fire. Please test your alarm regularly, and in the event of a fire get out, stay out and call 999.”
