Denbigh Station Celebrating 150 years

Posted

It is a special time for the Denbigh community as it witnesses the 150 year anniversary of its fire station being open.

In celebration of the station’s big day North Wales Fire and Rescue Service will be hosting an open day for the public on Sunday, September 20th, 11am - 3pm.

During the day people will have the opportunity to learn a little about the station and its history and how it has developed over the years, as well as enjoying a tour of the fire appliances and station.

Visitors will also be able to learn about fire safety and road safety through speaking to experienced firefighters, who will take part in training drills during the day.

There will also be a variety of quizzes and competitions available, and a chance for children to meet Tanni, our fire safety mascot.

Richard Fairhead, Assistant Chief Fire Officer for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “North Wales Fire and Rescue Service takes great pride in seeing one of its oldest operational fire stations celebrating a century and a half of work, and to see how it has become a part of the town’s heritage over the years.

“It has grown to become a strong staple in the Denbigh community since its beginnings in 1965. Today the station is staffed by RDS firefighters who also hold other various jobs such as a postman, chef, welder, plumber and university students, with the station housing one main appliance and one off road appliance.

“Operating from an open market hall, the rear yard of the Bull Hotel, the town hall site or the present day’s purpose built fire station, one key element that has not changed throughout this period is the commitment of Denbigh’s firefighters to continue the proud tradition of serving the community.”

Mike Newman, Watch Manager, Denbigh Fire Station, added: “I’m excited to celebrate such a huge landmark in the station’s history, and it’s a great opportunity to be able to share the occasion with the members of the community. We’ve had a lot of support over the years from the Denbigh community, and it’s nice to be able to offer something a little different in return.

“Although we are looking forward to having a little fun, and celebrate 150 years, it’s also a fantastic chance to get to speak to members of the public about their safety, whether it’s at home or on the road.

“It’s always good to remind people that we’re not simply here to put fires out, but also to prevent fires from occurring in the first place. This open day will be the perfect opportunity to offer advice and encourage residents to take advantage of our offer for free home safety checks.”
