Serious fire in Llanrwst - update

Posted

It has been confirmed that the 39 year old man taken to hospital following a fire in Llanrwst this morning (Friday 10th October) has since died.

This is the second fatality following the incident which also claimed the life of a 19 year old man.

Emergency services were called to the first floor flat on Ancaster Square, Llanrwst at 06.03hrs.

A joint investigation by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and North Wales Police is now underway to establish the cause of the fire - early indications are that it is not thought to be suspicious.

Chief Fire Officer Simon Smith said: "Our thoughts are with the families of the casualties of this tragic incident.

"The incident is a reminder to all of us of the importance of ensuring that homes are fitted with smoke alarms and that residents practise escape routes in the event of a fire.

"Despite our success with our work in fire prevention, this incident is also a stark reminder that fire can strike anyone, anywhere and we never know when or where our trained fire crews will be needed in North Wales.

"I would like to take this opportunity to praise the local Llanrwst crew which attended the incident to bring the fire under control."

Fire and Rescue Service staff will remain in the Llanrwst area over the weekend to offer free home fire safety checks to residents and promote the importance of smoke alarm ownership.

Residents in North Wales can call the 24 hour hotline on 0800 169 1243 or visit www.nwales-fireservice.org.uk to a request a free home fire safety check.
