Wheat bag warning following flat fire in Colwyn Bay

An elderly woman is being treated in hospital following a fire in herColwynBayflat in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, October 17th).

A wheat bag left to warm for too long in a microwave is believed to have been the cause of the incident atRhoslanParkonConwy Roadwhen firefighters fromColwynBaywere called at 03.56hrs.

The 93 year old occupant was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm and was given safety advice over the phone from fire and rescue service control operators whilst help was mobilised.

Police and ambulance staff were also mobilised.The occupant was led to safety and she was treated by paramedics at the scene for smoke inhalation, before being transferred to hospital as a precaution.

Other residents from the building were evacuated as a precaution and all were safely accounted for. Two others were treated at the scene and transferred to hospital as a precaution.

Gwyn Jonesfrom North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were notified by Careline that the smoke alarm had been activated at the property. This alarm proved invaluable as it gave us an early warning that there was a problem at the address and enabled emergency services to respond quickly.

"It appears that a wheat bag left to re-heat for too long caused the fire and we are warning residents throughoutNorth Waleswho have any kind of warming device such as this to ensure that they follow the manufacturer's instructions. We also advise not to leave any cooking unattended."
