Fire Officers are highlighting the dangers of leaving cooking unattended and the importance of smoke alarms after a total of six people needed treatment for smoke inhalation after kitchen fires in Ruthin and Deeside at the weekend.

Two crews from Deeside were called to a fire in a flat on Church Hill, Connah's Quay at 16:17 hrs on Saturday 14th January.

The fire, caused by a grillpan left unattended, caused two residents to have precautionary checks at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters from Denbigh were called to an incident involving cooking left unattended in the oven on Llanfair Road, Ruthin at 03:45hrs on Sunday, 15th January.

A man aged 21, a woman, 19, and two children, aged one and a few months old, were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Gareth Griffiths, Senior Fire Safety Manager, said:

"These incidents highlight the dangers of cooking left unattended and the importance of ensuring that you have working smoke alarms to allow you to escape as quickly as possible in the event of a fire.

"It is very important to check over cooking appliances to ensure that everything has been switched off correctly after use and remember to never leave cooking unattended for any length of time - a small fire can quickly spread into a life threatening one. We also advise never to attempt cooking after drinking alcohol - drinking and cooking definitely do not mix.

"If you do have smoke alarms, ensure that you test them regularly. If you do not, we at North Wales Fire and Rescue Service offer free home fire safety checks, where a member of the Service will visit your home, give fire safety hints and tips, help you to formulate a fire escape plan and fit new alarms - all free of charge.

"This service is available to all residents in North Wales. I would appeal to you to check that all your family, friends or neighbours have had a check undertaken

"To register for a free home fire safety check, please call our 24 hour free hotline on 0800 169 1234, e-mail cfs@nwales-fireservice.org.uk or visit www.nwales-fireservice.org.uk. One call could save your life and the lives of your loved ones."
