Equality Impact Assessments

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service as a public authority is required to have due regard in its decision making to:

  1. eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation, and
  2. to advance equality of opportunity.
  3. we also need to foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.


One way to show due regard is to carry out assessments of the potential equality impact of proposed changes to policies, procedures and practices.

The aim of an equality impact assessment (EIA) is to ensure that equality issues have been consciously considered throughout the decision-making processes of the work we do.

The EIA highlights any areas of risk and maximises the benefits of proposals in terms of equality.  It therefore helps to ensure equal access to all our services and demonstrates that we have considered everyone who might be affected by the proposal.  It also helps us to meet our legal responsibilities under the general equality duties (Single Equality Act 2010).

Our approach to EIAs will help us to strengthen our work to promote equality
